SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation – Its the process search engines use to rank your website for relevance and popularity. Type any topic into Google or Yahoo and you are presented with thousands of links to websites recommended as being the closest match to your search.  The SEO process determines which ones get to the top of the search listings.  Whats important to remember is that these search engines don’t have preferences.  They wont pick your website because its the easiest to navigate or has a sleek design.  The internet “spiders” search for text and relevant keywords only.

  • Use the right keywords in your website.  Don’t overuse, for example if you are a plumber only type plumbing services a couple of times on the page.  You need to balance the right number of keywords with good content.  If your website is just a bunch of disjointed keywords repeated then customers are unlikely to call you.
  • Build links with partner sites or blogs on other sites.  The “spiders” pick up these links and if other companies link back to your site it will increase your ranking.
  • Register your site with the major search engines.  The major players such as Google and Yahoo have their own system for registering your website so that their “spiders” and “crawlers” can find you. Its also the best way to get exposure for your site and give your customers an opportunity to find you!

Finding and Installing Antivirus Software

Working on an unprotected computer can be dangerous. Shady hackers could get into a computer and steal the computer owner’s private and vital information. An unprotected computer can also get a virus that could be harmful for the computer. That makes finding and installing antivirus software very important.

When connecting to the Internet a computer is at risk of catching a virus, worm or other harmful software. A computer that does not connect to the internet is safe from these elements. When such software as Malware, attaches to a computer it can slow the computer and make it work less effectively. It can even shut down the computer completely. What are some ways to prevent an attack on the computer:

*install antivirus and antispyware software

*don’t open email from strangers

*keep software current

Using antivirus or even anti-spyware software means a continual check for viruses or harmful software. When these are found they get rid of it before a problem arises. The process is done through security scans.

New computers often have a trial program, but it does expire and the owner needs to install more permanent antivirus software. This will prevent any virus from sneaking in and taking over the computer. Anyone can install antivirus software, but first they need to find it. This important software can be found in stores and as an online download. Just be sure the online option is trustworthy or a virus might be attached. That defeats the purpose of installation.

Once the antivirus software is purchased it needs to be installed on the computer to be effective. If it is a download it often starts up following download. A message will indicate what steps need to be taken. If working with a CD just insert it into the drive and watch for instructions to explain when efforts need to be taken to complete installation.

Internet History

People can connect to the Internet throughout the world since most areas have access. Of course the internet had to start somewhere which means it has a history.

The year 1962 is considered the beginning of the internet. The point was for computers to share research information and help in scientific research. It was first introduced by J.C.R. Licklider from MIT.

This may surprise some since it was decades later that people started to hear about the internet, using the internet, understanding the internet and growing to depend on the internet. Well, even when the internet was created it was not called the internet. It was ARPANet.

It started in a time when there were not many computers. Computers that were in use were big enough to fill a room and were not in homes. Computers were expensive and were only found being used at some big companies. The official first “internet” use was Oct. 29, 1969 by Charley Kline at UCLA.

The internet concept was moved from group to group to help it become developed for use. Many were involved in creating the internet and many of these individuals have not been recognized for their efforts. The United Stated Department of Defense had the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) start up efforts that were the beginning of today’s internet concept. It was not until 1992 when the internet was starting to get used more widely. This time included:

  • Computers working faster and finding their place in homes
  • Internet use grows
  • Bandwidth increases

Internet Kill Switch

Is there an internet kill switch? This is when the government turns of the internet for the entire area, but does it really insist?

It is possible because government officials are discussing it. This is the Protecting Cyberspace National Asset legislation. It is being called the “kill switch”. Why is this even being considered? Reasons to use the “kill switch” includes protection from cyber terrorists that could harm with economical and infrastructure threats.

The idea of this is controversial. People indicate it is a free speech issue and takes away a person’s privacy to have the internet. Issues with the internet have happened in the past. Some examples are:

*Hackers have snuck into the NASDAQ stock exchange systems. Even though the trading system was safe it shows it is a risk.

* A hacker took control of eBay, Amazon.com and other such systems during an attack.

*Cyber attacks have led to sensitive material being stolen from a variety of companies and even banks.

Flipping a “kill switch” affects more than not being to check e-mail. It can affect the economic, communications and many forms of security as well as much more. Many people have indicated a “kill switch” would help prevent possible cyber attacks while others don’t like the idea of their freedoms being taken away. If the kill switch does become a reality the law is calling for the President to notify the Congress when the actual action is being considered. That would make it a group effort to decide if it is the right time to take action and protect the people against a serious cyber attack.

The “kill switch” is still being considered. That means all the options; pros and cons are still being discussed. It is thought that there should be specific emergency system checks in place before it is put into effect. This is to help make this a positive action instead of a negative one.

Finding the latest fun computer gadgets can be an enjoyable journey. It seems something new and different is coming on the market every day. Many items could take some time to hit the mainstream or be affordable enough for everyone though. Still these items continue to be improved and evolved until they are ready for everyone’s use if they are popular enough to continue production.

When looking for computer gadgets they need to be useful. There have been gadgets that are fun, but not useful. Therefore when the novelty wore off the gadget fell to the way side. The cost is another important factor. Using the Internet to Find an Online School

More and more students are using the Internet to attend classes and receive an education then ever before. By enrolling in a school that offers online classes, students can participate in the class, finish assignments and do research, all while sitting in the comfort of their own home.

Finding the type of online schooling that you need requires research. There may be several hundred schools that give you the option of attending online, but they may not fit into your budget. Finding a school you can afford may take time and patience. Another drawback of using an online school is the time zone differences. There can be a three hour difference just in the United States alone, meaning that someone on the West Coast would have to be up extremely early to participate in classes that begin at 8 am on the East Coast.

Another issue is whether or not you will need to receive a diploma when you finish the online schooling. An accredited online school is usually run by a large, well known college that is licensed to give diplomas after the student successfully finishes the required courses. A school that is not accredited can teach you everything you need to know to earn a diploma, but they are not set up or legally able to give the student the diploma. One for instance, is a nursing program. The student can attend online classes and learn all the skills needed from a non-accredited school, but would then have to go to the State Nursing Board to take the test to see if their newly learned skills are up to par to receive a license. For most students, it is better to attend an accredited online school. By making a list of schools that you believe may be able to meet your needs, then researching each one, you should be able to eventually find the perfect match.

The fact that the Internet is in nearly every home across the world, along with the ability to send and receive email, has drastically changed the way people communicate with each other. Writing personal letters, setting up business schedules and faxing important documents can be done within a few minutes, as opposed to the time it used to take by using the regular mail system. Now people from all over the world are able to communicate with each other by simply typing a letter and clicking on the “send” icon. Within minutes, the email is sent and received, even over thousands of miles.
 
Email is used consistently by large and small business owners. Orders can be received, receipts sent, information regarding when the client can expect the goods and even the ability to pay for items ordered online, is used by millions each day. The Internet has helped small business owners grow much more quickly then they could have in the past, due to the fact that most businesses now own and operate web pages that give the consumer all of the information on their products or services, by simply clicking on an icon on the website. Small businesses can also expand into international areas by using the Internet. Distance is no longer a hindrance. 
 
Educators for all ages were quick to see the advantages of using a computer, the Internet and even email services as a way to teach their students. Many schools have their own websites that allow students to correspond with their teachers if they have questions about a lesson or homework. Teachers have set up safe Internet sites that are closely monitored by other teachers, so the children can have a kid-safe place on the Internet to be in contact with each other, discuss or post pictures of sporting events, or share the latest school news with each other.

Using the Internet for a Personal Website

Operating your very own personal website can be a fun experience. You don’t have to be a computer genius either, as most simple web pages are quite simple to put together and operate. Using a personal website allows the owner/operator to keep in touch with their family members and friends, post pictures, update family news, leaves messages or even discuss special interests.
 
Many website hosts offer web pages to clients free of charge. Depending on your budget, this may be a good option for many. One of the drawbacks of having a personal website that is free, is that the sites usually depend on advertisements from large companies to pay for the site. Because of this, your page may have several ads on it, and many may be for products you don’t necessarily promote yourself. Owners of personal websites are not usually given a choice as to what types of ads are placed on their page, and it may become irritating to some to have to keep clicking pop-up ads off the page in order to view it correctly. 
 
For a minimal fee, some companies offer the user a personal website that is free or nearly free of advertisements. They also normally have more options, such as extra ways to decorate or personalize the page, which is always fun. If for instance you have a specific hobby that you are interested in and will be discussing at length on your web page, such as trains, a paid web host may offer numerous amounts of clip art you can use to decorate in that theme. 

Deciding on which type to use is purely a personal decision that can be made after you have researched both types. Many customers enjoy the free sites, even if they don’t offer quite as many options as a paid site. For those who are more serious about their web page, paying a small monthly or yearly fee may be best.

The Internet and the Social Network

The Internet has opened the door to people being able to meet people. Distance is no longer a barrier when Internet users wish to communicate with others, even if they are from different countries. The Internet offers options for communication between people in endless ways. Email is available, as is social networking. Social networking has become so popular, that nearly everyone can state that they have met at least one, if not several people, online. 

If you have never used a social networking site before, there are a few basic safety rules that should be heeded. Keep in mind that anyone can post anything on these types of sites, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that the information is correct or true. Parents that have children wishing to join a social networking site should take extra precautions to make sure the site is as safe as possible. Having your computer in a room that is in the open is one tip for safety regarding children. Making sure you have constant availability to what your child is reading and what they are writing is also very important. Unfortunately, too often adults will pose as teens in chat rooms and on social networking pages, which is of course, very dangerous.
 
Networking pages can also be used to discuss hobbies, interests, the latest books, and even politics, although those sites sometimes tend to get out of control when tempers flare over different opinions! The array of topics are endless. You may possibly think for instance, that you are the only person in the world that is interested in growing African Violets, but by joining a social networking site, you may find thousands of others that also enjoy them and are anxious to discuss it with another person that has the same interest. Discussions and interests abound on social networking sites.
